Overview:
Operation MERKUR was to open with the softening up of Allied positions on Crete by the Luftwaffe. Following the bombing, the elite Fallschirmjäger of Flieger-Division 7 would land by parachute and glider and quickly seize their objectives. Having been alerted by the bombers, anti-aircraft positions greeted the Ju-52s with heavy fire as they approached their intended drop zones, forcing many Ju-52s well to the south of their planned drop sites. The paratroopers from Kompanie 10 of Major Otto Scherber's Sturm-Bataillon III were among the many dropped far off course, and they found themselves floating down around the town of Modhion. Intelligence reports had the Fallschirmjäger expecting light resistance and friendly Greek civilians.
