Overview:

On the first day of Operation Barbarossa, the Germans and their many Axis partners began crossing the frontier on their quest to conquer the Soviet Union. In Army Group Center, the initial German forces were busy crossing the Bug River. Three German Infantry Divisions, the 137th, 263rd and 292nd began crossing the Bug and moving toward Bransk. In support were the StuG’s of StuG-Abteilung 226. The StuG’s would spend the morning hours waiting on construction of a bridge strong enough to carry their weight. Once across the Bug, the StuG’s went quickly into action against counter-attacking Soviet armor. On the 23rd, the 226 was in Bransk along with the Recon Battalion of the 263rd Infantry Division. It wasn’t long after sunrise, that Soviet armor and infantry could be seen headed towards Bransk. The StuG’s and Recon Battalion dug in and prepared to meet this next counterattack.
