Overview:
Task Force 31 had the mission to clear New Georgia. The first stages of this required reconnaissance followed by an operation to capture Segi Point and Viru Harbor to establish an airfield and logistics base. A Marine Raider platoon was to secure Tomb Village in support of the main attack on Viru Harbor. Moving through the jungle, the point fire team came to a ridge running perpendicular to the trail. Continuing on, the Raiders started up the slope when suddenly over forty Japanese soldiers opened fire with small arms and three Nambu light machineguns. . .Attacker: American (USMC) (Company P, 4th Marine Raider Battalion)
