Overview:
Securing Maleme airfield gave the Germans the initiative. Heavily reinforced, they began advancing eastwards towards Canea, while a sizeable force threatened the New Zealanders’ flank from Prison Valley. In an effort to stem the German advance in that sector, on 25 May Brig Kippenberger directed the now famous counter-attack by his makeshift 10th Bde that recaptured the hilltop village of Galatas at bayonet-point. This proved only a temporary tactical success; increasing pressure by the Germans, who made good use of their command of the air by bombing the defenders almost continuously, obliged the Allied forces to withdraw to the east to avoid being surrounded.Attacker: German (Kampfgruppe Ramcke/ 2nd Battalion, 100th Regiment, 5th Gebirgsjäger Division)
Defender: New Zealand (10th New Zealand Brigade/ Petrol Company, 10th NZ Brigade/ 3rd Hussars)

2024-10-16 | (D) Justin DiSabatino | vs | New Zealand win | New Zealand units set up with a forward defense on board v to slow the Germans as much as possible and force them into the CAs of the HIP artillery. This worked well, with the Germans struggling to gain momentum until both guns malf'd and then one broke on the repair attempt. The second never repaired before the crew was killed and this let the German wave sweep over the NZ line. NZ MG nests still managed to slow the German advance, but the Germans dashed through the open field to the south to start infiltrating the village. The Germans in the village had already reduced the NZ presence so that the Germans were able to get a toehold before the NZ reinforcements entered. I felt this was key; if the reinforcements are able to set up throughout the village, it would have been much harder for the Germans to dig them out. One MkVIB was taken out by HMG on entry (critical hit) but the other moved in to stall the Germans, holding the uJ boulevard. In the end, the Germans captured all of the stone buildings except I4, and it came down to the last CC roll of the game.

2023-09-29 | (A) David Garvin | vs | Gary Olson | German win | As part of Slackers Con 2023. I had a mix of luck to start, and one of the defender guns had an amazing run! 2 Critical hits and he also had a number of incredible rate tears. In the end, I was able to knock out a tank with an ATR and then counter attack when his reinforcements stormed a building he needed to take the win. In CC, I rolled 1, 1 to seal the deal. Great Fun!
2023-07-22 | (A) Bob McKenna | vs | Lou Padilla | New Zealand win | Germans attacked in line and broke though pickets on left and center. Germans crossed first hill and found 75 gum on next hill. Gun kept rate and caused casualties. Germans pressed left, the long way to town. Found 2nd gun in Wheatfield. New Zealanders held the right. Repaired 2nd gun 2x. Kiwis created a leader in HOB and harassed the German rear guard. . Germans got into the wooden buildings and ran into Light tanks and re inforcement. Germans tangled with tanks but the day was lost. No stone buildings taken. Heavy casualties on both sides. Kiwis win. Great game, Lou.

2021-07-29 | (D) Jim Liang | vs | Mark Dennehy | German win (VASL Log) | Fun scenario. Interesting map and situation. Outcome was in doubt until the last two turns when things started to crumble. KG Ramcke was a thorn in my side the entire game and ended up finishing me at the end.

2021-02-24 | (A) Jonathan Townsend | vs | Myself | German win
2020-10-26 | (D) Scott Fischbein | vs | Craig Renier | New Zealand win | The Germans came on strong against some forward NZ guns/squads, one of which malfed early and was overrun... The resistance in the west did not last long against the onslaught, but did slow them down a bit. A second line of defense in the trees hung on a bit longer before being torn up by some high rate mortar fire. The battle in the town was intense, with buildings changing control a few times. The oncoming Hussars managed to take over an abandoned building and then hunker down with AFV support to hold off the Germans trying to recapture their territory. Came down to a fun, tense last turn with an all out assault from the Germans who couldn't quite get into the CC they would have needed for the win. Looking at the ROAR record, I think we should have given the balance to the German, but didn't notice it before the game - softening up those Hussars would make the German's task a bit easier. Fun game with a great opponent.
2020-10-26 | (A) Craig Renier | vs | Scott Fischbein | New Zealand win | The Germans made steady progress and advanced in force along the North flank. However, mid scenario the Allied player was able to break a number of squads which severely weakened the attack. The German player was able to win a risky close combat in a victory building, but mistakenly did not adequately defend the first German controlled building against the Allied reinforcements. While it came down to the final turn, the German hope for victory was based on very low odds.

2018-05-14 | (D) Tripp Killin | vs | Sebastian Killin | New Zealand win | We switched sides, and I gave the German balance of crappier NZ reinforcements. As NS, it turns out I didn't need the reinforcements. I rolled 7 snake-eyes in the first 2 turns, which dramatically hampered the German assault and also wiped out the token German 5-4-8s in town. Germans didn't win a single CC. By end of Turn 3, NZ had a squad advantage, and Germans conceded. This is a tough one on the Germans, but very fun to play.
2018-05-08 | (A) Tripp Killin | vs | Sebastian Killin | New Zealand win | I gave my son the NZ balance of getting reinforcements early. He needed it as the 10-2-led troops just rampaged through the first half of the scenario, shrugging off MCs and winning lethal CC's. As Germans entered town, tankettes put up some fire, but one broke a gun and was recalled, and the other was Shocked/UK by an ATR. Germans swarmed the final defensive positions, but one New Zealand Squad was left in the last hex of the last building at the end of the last turn. So close, but NZ wins.
2017-06-04 | (D) O Ramaille | vs | New Zealand win | The 10th New Zealand Brigade setup stacked near Kampfgruppe Ramcke to hold and rout it and thus be able to reinforce the Petrol Company, without much success but to keep them to advance. The Petrol Company faced the 5th Gebirgsjäger Division who pushed them back without much harm. However, the Petrol Company held back most of the Gebirgsjäger who had lots of difficulties to enter Galatas. The 3rs Hussars enter in reinforcement when the first Gebirgsjäger entered the town. The German made some progress but the precise fire of the New Zealanders and the covering position of the Mark VIB tanks prevent the germans to capture all multi-hex buildings. Two were still controlled by the New Zealand Brigade and two were still uncontrolled at the end of the game. A victory for Commonwealth Forces.

2012-10-07 | (D) Victor Von Vector | vs | LangstonB | New Zealand win | Brits held the hill at the N end to keep Gerry at the edge of the map for 3 turns. Malfed the West ATR which allowed German easy path through grain. Brits blundered some route-paths but were able to hold the stone building at the edge of U to keep Germans in the w/o much cover. Then reinforcements arrived. Gerry surrendered on turn 6.
