Overview:
On the 22nd of September, although no definitive agreement had yet been reached which authorized the Japanese Army to station troops north of Tonkin, the Japanese 5th Infantry Division crossed the Indo-Chinese border, under pressure from Chinese nationalist forces, and penetrated as far as Tonking. At the same time, a Japanese squadron composed of eight MTBs and as many transport boats crossed Haiphong Bay. The Japanese troops would disembark peacefully in the town of Haiphong, but recent fighting made this operation unfeasible, and General Nishimura who was responsible for disembarking the troops became impatient. Fearing the harbor of Haiphong might be mined, the Japanese landed 10 miles south in the Song Can De estuary which was defended by a section of the 14th Company of the I/19th RMIC.Attacker: Japanese (5th Infantry Division)
