Overview:

Eniwetok could not be secured on the first day of invasion. The Army units involved were just too cautious because of doctrine. The Marines were brought in to help capture the island. After a hellish night of shelling, friendly fire casualties, and Japanese infiltrations, the second day saw the Marines push the Japanese back into the eye of the hook-shaped islet.
