Overview:
"Baptism of Fire" - On 12th May 1942, the Red Army launched a major offensive towards Kharkov, hoping to encircle the forces of the German 6th Army around the city. However, the much larger than expected German reserves were quickly alerted, including the 23rd Panzer Division, which had been formed in France in 1941, and had arrived in early April. Placed under the command of Generalleutannt Von Seydlitz’s 51st Army Corps, the 23rd PD prepared its counterattack. On the morning of the 13th, with its motorcycle battalion hard-pressed by the Russian tanks, the Division had deployed three kampfgruppen on its right, including the Kampfgruppe Von Heydebrand, formed around the Panzer Regiment and a Panzergrenadier battalion. By late morning, the 23rd Panzer Division and a KG from the 3rd Panzer Division advanced to face the riflemen of the Russian 38th Army.Attacker: Russian (Elements 81st Rifle Division & 13th and 133rd Tank Brigades)
