The Fuhrer was dead and the Soviet juggernaut was fast closing in on the remnants of the 1st SS Panzer Division (Leibstandarte). Now, even these, the most fanatical German troops knew the war was over. None of them wanted to be the last to die, or even worse, become a prisoner of the Russians. On 2 May, Untersturmfuhrer Warnecke led a detachment of former Tiger tank crews from SS-Panzer Abteilung 591 to the Nibelungen Work to draw two new Jagdtigers and bring them back to the division headquarters. From there, they road-marched to Waidhofen where they formed a kampfgruppe with ten newly delivered Panzer IVs. Their mission was to delay the lead elements of the Russian 20th Guards Rifle Corps while the rest of Leibstandarte retreated to the west, taking the last open corridor to surrender to the American army. One Jagdtiger was immobilized and had to be destroyed by its crew before the fight even started, leaving the last Jagdtiger to wait in ambush with the Panzer IVs. Soon, Russian tanks came into view. . .
The Russians approached both flanks of the German concentrated defense centered in the last cross-roads of the victory road segment relatively unscathed, removed the .50/.30 cals from the M3A1 Scout Car (more later), and teased out the JadgTiger and one Mark IV on the German's left. In the ensuing dance of death, two T-34/85s were brewed-up by PFs, but took out one Mark IV and Shocked the Jadgtiger, prompting its demise in Turn 4 CC by swarming infantry. Three more T-34/85s fell by PFs while attempting to push the Germans off the cross-roads. In the final turn, the Russians had their last T-34/85 in the victory conditions hexes, but it could not hit the remaining Mark IV in F14, and the Russian infantry were in position to undertake CC with all German squads in/adjacent to the road, but could not reach the Mark IV due to shifting AFV fires that screened the German withdrawal and doubled the Russian's MFs. In retrospect, the Russian flank move on the German right went too wide - a more direct approach would have saved time and allowed more concentrated fire (especially with the .50 which is too many PP to move far). DM attempts against the JagdTiger may also have been more fruitful, and the T-34/85s needed to hold back out PF range (1945!) until the infantry cleared their counterparts. Remembering that the Russians have 2 - count them 2 - M3A1 Scout Cars may also have helped..... Duh.

A very spread out and off balance German defence soon got chewed up by the Russian, and the infantry was destroyed piecemeal. While the scout cars were misused, the T-34s overwhelmed the JgdTiger losing only one, but then the Pz IVs proceeded to pick off every T-34 trying to make the exit, making for an automatic win even if every last German infantry was eliminated for little Russian loss, right in the last CCPh. A tense game that swung both ways repeatedly.

Very close - thought I was going to lose after making very slow progress and losing two T34/85s in the first couple of turns. However, I eventually managed to immobilise the JagdTiger and subsequent fire forced the crew to bail out, and the luck then started going my way. I was kept in suspense as one PzkwIV managed to remain concealed until my very last turn. I finally found and destroyed it in the AFPh by surrounding it with three T34/85s, whilst another T34/85 managed to rush past the other PzkwIV to exit as required, and my last CC attacks then finished the job.

A very close and exciting game. My JagTiger was a failure; after several unsuccessful shots against T34/85s hull down behind wall it fell to a CC attack led by the Russian 9-2 leader. My PzkW which I thought was cunningly hidden in 2aN10 also achieve little, although part of the Russian attack got delayed in that area putting them behind schedule. In the end I held out only because the Russians couldn't shift me from the last building: 5aF14.

I hipped all three AFV as specified by the SSR. All three were in woods, however; I think I would put two or three in orchards next time. Most of my infantry was hidden from first turn fire, but not all. I had two units in different locations covering the center bridge. One HIP Pz4 covered it as well. I looked for a good legal high spot for the JgPz6 to dominate the map, but I saw none. Erik's attack came in mostly on the Russian right with two T34 left in high overwatch positions. Our match went all the way to the last turn. I had lost two Pz4. Erik had lost 1 T34 and 1 SC. The JgPz6 had moved away from the VC road and it was in the center of the map at the start of the last German turn. Erik had sent all the T34 to engage the infantry that was accumulated in the buildings near the end of the VC road. I was able to move the JgPz6 to the central bridge to satisfy the VC. On the last Russian turn, Erik sent several T34 back to engage the JgPz6 without success.

Hard to get a true feel for this one as my opponent setup a very forward defense that I opted to just sit and blast on Turn 1. By the end of the turn half of his infantry and both leaders were gone. After that my infantry were just tasked with scouting for the hidden AFVs. There was one pesky German squad in the middle of the road behind the wall that we had to tie up and run around. I lost my first tank to the King Tiger conducting an overrun here. Another tank showed its face in the woods lining the west side of the road but whiffed on its shot at me and then MALF'd its MA on an IF shot. It was blown to bits the next turn. I lucked out breaking a German squad with my advancing fire that would have been in good position to move concealed next to me for a PF shot. After killing two more squads in CC there was only one GO squad left. The third tank MALF'd its gun on its very first shot at me and, with the King Tiger bound to be assaulted from all positions, there was just no way the Germans could win so they conceded on Turn 3.

My opponent opted for a forward aggressive setup, unfortunately for fear of HW he didn't put any SS trooper supporting his AFV. In my opinion 1 German AFV must stay on the hills in order to interfere with Russian movement. Nice scenario btw.

Russians must clear the road and exit a T-34. His ambushing Pz4's missed their shots so I could afford to be aggressive. Nice scenario. StL2017
