Overview:
In the early days of December 1944, the 100th Infantry Division was pushing through the Vosges towards the German border with the objective of seizing the French town of Bitche. During the advance, the 100th met strong German resistance at the village of Lemberg. On the morning of 9 December, GIs of Love Company, 399th Infantry Regiment drew the assignment to capture a key railroad trestle straddling the road to Lemberg. Under the cover of a smokescreen, the GIs moved out of a nearby draw and headed for the railroad embankment. Lt. Bennett Taylor of the 3rd Platoon gave the order to charge. The Americans rushed forward and were met by intense mortar, machine gun, and 20mm antiaircraft fire.Attacker: American (Company L, 399th Infantry Regiment, 100th Division)
