Overview:

Hill 311 was a hill on the south west side of Inor woods, overlooking the westernmost fort of the Maginot Line, Le Ferté ouvrage (Werk 505 for the Germans). The 71st Infanterie-Division tasked to take this fort, first took the barren slopes of Hill 311, after a heavy fight on the 17th of May. The fort was then nearly completely encircled. On the 18th of May at the end of the afternoon, a counterattack was decided to help the surrounded fort with just arrived heavy tanks from the 41eme Bataillon de Chars de Combat and infantry from the 6eme Division d'Infanterie.
