Originally slated for the Inchon invasion, Major General Hobart "Hap" Gay's 1st Cavalry Division was instead rushed from Japan into the Pusan Perimeter to relieve the battered 24th Infantry Division after the debacle at Taejon. Five years of easy occupation duty coupled with an earlier transfer of several hundred NCO's into the eighth Army as replacements had already left the 1st Cavalry Division in no condition for immediate action. As the North Korean 3rd Division chewed up every American and ROK defensive position on the way to Pusan, Gay's untried division would have to plug the gap until more help could come from across the Pacific.
