Overview:

The southern shoulder of Operation HERBSTNABEL saw weak German Volksgrenadier divisions gain early success against resting American divisions on the Luxembourg side of the Our River, including the 60th Armored Infantry Battalion of the 9th Armored Division. By 18 December, with his companies separated and surrounded, Lt. Col. Kenneth Collins did his best to make an organized retreat towards Ermsdorf and Fels. As the main attack of Volksgrendier-Regiment 986 hit Savelborn in the afternoon, it was repulsed by the quad .50-caliber halftracks of the 482nd Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion.
Attacker: German (Volksgrenadier-Regiment 986, Volksgrenadier-Division 276)

2023-02-19(A) Jeff B vs Steve Etzelmueller German winGermans conducted a heavy eastern approach, except for a long StuG in the west which broke down attempting to stop on the Level 2 summit. Not ideal at all, but his job was to enshroud the steeple MMG nest in smoke, which he did the next turn with his one and only smoke shot. Very interesting decision by the Americans to hold absolutely all fire during Turn 1 German moves. I suppose they figured there was no way their 6ML would hold up to all the German advancing fire. They were then able to safely extricate everyone but the mortar-bearing HS who broke trying to leave the central hill summit. This mortar would prove invaluable to the Germans going forward. Turn 2 saw the Germans split their force in two and swarm the central hill and eastern woods, with the Americans again sticking to their concealment. The previous mortar-bearing HS was rounded up as a POW for the first casualty of the game. Turn 3 saw the Germans enshroud the front line eastern VC building with smoke (running out of smoke with another StuG during the mission), but take a much more cautious approach with all the OG in the middle and the Meatchopper watching the east. CC would be tough for the Germans as it took 3 HS to match up with each American squad, but would be a necessary part of the game plan, with the first one being a 1 squad to 2 HS wash. Turn 3 for the Americans mostly saw them bolster their building defenses, with a squad coming on in the far west, an AC to watch western road, another to watch the far east, with the rest of the Americans shoring up the middle. Again I was a bit surprised at the rather light defense committed to the east, but the Germans were applying pressure all over the place and tough decisions needed to be made. This really is a puzzle for both sides, and I imagine very few games of this will play the same. Turn 4 saw the Germans throw down more smoke from their one remaining eligible StuG to cover the assault up the middle, but this area would turn into a decided standoff over the next couple turns. Meanwhile in the east they froze the lone AC over there with another StuG, allowing German infantry to close in and situate themselves on the hill. The Germans grabbed the far west and far east buildings, but this would be as far as they'd get capturing real estate. With the AC in the east being fried by a PF, the Americans shifted both remaining ACs and the Meatchopper over this way to stave off what looked to be the next focus of the Germans' push. No doubt this would be a difficult route now for the Germans, but a lucky CH from the captured mortar knocked out the Meatchopper, and a StuG knocked out one of the ACs. Once again the eastern defense was suspect, but the Americans were forced to pull back from there a bit to help protect the middle buildings. The mortars next task was to help keep the Americans off the northern Level 2 hill hexes and, between that and the German MG kill stack, they did the job nicely. With the Germans in relative control of the northern hill (and in firm control of the CVP battle) they would make a break for the exit on Turn 6. When the StuG failed to lay sD smoke before driving off, the infantry would have to survive a 3-1 shot, and all 4 Germans HS would have to survive unpinned for the Germans to hit the 10 exit VP mark. When the lone American HS in position to do anything cowered on double 5s it was game over. Considering I had quite a fair bit of luck at crucial moments and still barely pulled out a victory, I'd say this one is quite tough for the Germans.
2023-02-17(A) Eric Partizan Eric vs American win
2023-02-06(D) Dave Mareske vs Dennis Dowd American winThe Germans attacked fairly broadly with the strong force on the right flank. The US had just a couple squads and a BAZ44 over on that side. The left flank attack collapsed which left the Germans with few options. STUGs kept driving up to my half-track, I would go in motion (once in reverse motion) and got away each time, then drive next to some broken units to eliminate them. Wrecked one STUG with a rear shot from the 37LL and burning wrecked another in CC. Tight fight but the US had the Germans pinned on the right flank, called the game on Turn 5.
2023-01-29(D) Andy Goldin vs Ken Dunn American winThis game was a quick American victory thanks to my mediocre play and very hot dice. Before getting to that, I'd like to mention that LOS on this map is tough. Although the orchards are out of season, the trees are pine trees which makes them level 2 -- as Ken pointed out before we started -- and thereby highlighting the flaws of my setup. Ken's attack cleared my HS outpost on the south-central hilltop by Turn 2 and advanced up both sides of the board. Both of us started with crazy dice rolls, as we rolled either 3s and 4s or 11s and 12s, thanks to random.org. Ken got a low odds hit on my M16GMC from a STuG on his recently-captured hill, knocking it out before the HT fired a shot. I malf'd my poorly-positioned 60mm mortar on a shot which I didn't actually have. Meanwhile Ken malf'd the MA on one of his STUGs and later disabled it, forcing a recall. My hot dice won the game for me, as I typically rolled 2s and 3s on my IFT shots while Ken rolled 8s and 9s on his MCs. The rolls were so crazy that by my Turn 3 Ken had only 10 of his 16 squads online, with the remainder being broken or KIA and only 2 STUGs still in the fight. Other than the loss of my halftrack, I had suffered no casualties... and this was before my Turn 3 reinforcements entered. Understandably frustrated, Ken failed his PMC and we called the game.
2023-01-14(D) nathan wegener vs Wes Vaughn German winGermans have a big challenge but the Americans are thin. Good fun back and forth challenge.
