Overview:

The battle of the Grebbeberg was one of the most intense and significant battles fought during the German invasion of the Netherlands in May 1940. It took place along the Grebbelinie (Grebbe Line), a key Dutch defensive position in the central Netherlands. The Grebbeberg is a ridge approximately SO meters high near the town of Rhenen in the Province of lJtrecht and forms part of a natural defensive line along the eastern edge of the Dutch central river region. The ridge overlooks the Gelderse Vallei (Gelderland Valley) and was a crucial anchor point in the Dutch defensive system. The Grebbe Line was the Netherlands primary defensive position, running from the IJsselmeer in the north to the Rhine River in the south. The Grebbeberg formed a natural strongpoint in this line, controlling access to the western Netherlands. Holding this position was essential to prevent German forces from reaching the Dutch heartland and "Fortress Holland." Dutch military strategy involved holding this line long enough to allow Allied reinforcements to arrive.
