Overview:

Major General Paul W. Baade's 35th Infantry Division relieved the 4th Armored Division and was defending Fresnes and Gremecy with a series of blocking positions in the Forêt de Grémecey. Generalmajor Kurt von Muehlen's Volksgrenadier Division 559 and Oberst Franz Bake' s Panzer Brigade 106 struck the 35th Infantry's line, attacking toward Moncel to threaten the Nancy road. Blocking this German onslaught was 1st LT Rex Hopper's Love Company, 3rd Battalion, 137th Infantry Regiment, defending a hilly area between Fresnes and the heavily wooded area of Forêt de Grémecey. Just after dawn, the situation became critical. German artillery fire heralded the arrival of Oberst Balce's Panthers, Jagdpanzer IV/70s, and halftrack-mounted infantry supporting the Volksgrendier main attack from Fresnes. The Germans also conducted numerous infiltrating attacks against the American flanks. German armor began to penetrate the wooded area and threatened to encircle First Lieutenant Rex Hopper's beleaguered Love Company. Simultaneously, M-10 GMCs from the 654th Tank Destroyer Battalion and Sherman tanks from Company C, 737th Tank Battalion intercepted the enemy AFVs.
